3 key things I learned from the fashion industry

It has been just a few years since I started working in the fashion industry, however, it feels like a lifetime. I mean I'm not even sure what year we are in. Is it AW 22/23 already? I thought I might share my key takeaways from my experience so far.

Your soft skills are more important than anything you know technically
I have actually heard many times Senior people say “I don’t really mind what they know.. I can train them in anything I need. I care if they are cool people to be around.” And it’s true. It’s much more important what your personality is. Do you have initiative? Will you get your boss a glass of water without being asked just by looking at their empty glass? Can you talk to people? Do you have a positive approach? Are you curious? Easy-going? A genuinely nice individual? You can quickly learn how to use a short-cut on illustrator but how can you learn to be a cool person overnight?
Your job won’t be creative 100% of the time and that’s okay
And that’s okay, really. It doesn’t matter if you work for yourself or for a brand/ company, you will always have responsibilities that you are not so keen on doing. Whether it's doing taxes for your business at the end of the year or cracking on with putting travel expenses in the system from a work trip, there is always that not so creative task you need to complete. The sooner you accept it and find a way to do it with pleasure (by putting in the airpods with some cool podcasts on for instance), the greater fulfillment you will get from your job.
Single tasking is the best way to do multitasking
Fashion is an industry in which everything changes almost with the speed of light. Usually you will find yourself handling a variety of tasks at the same time, and it can be overwhelming at times. The best way to conquer the workload is one step at a time. Instead of looking at everything you have to achieve and trying to figure it all out at the same time, take a moment to put together a priority list and tackle the bullet points one by one. What needs doing like today, right now. Start from there. Focus on each task individually until its completion. This is the best way to do things productively without stressing out.
And remember, everyone has different experiences and can only speak from their point of view. There are always exceptions for everything. However, trying your best to be a good person, finding a positive approach towards all responsibilities and working on being productive can definitely make a difference!
Sincerely Yours,
Elena
